From the Rector: Third Sunday of Advent

What is going on around here?

I thought I would take the opportunity to pass along information about a few things that are taking place and being planned here at the Cathedral.

First, the Diocese of Gallup is launching its year long celebration of our 75th anniversary as a diocese. The actual date of the establishment was December 16, 1939. Bishop Wall celebrated a Mass on Friday Dec. 12th to inaugurate the celebration on the Feast of our principle patroness, Our Lady of Guadalupe. This Mass was streamed live on the Internet and can be found on the Diocesan website, www.dioceseofgallup.org. Now that the cameras and editing equipment have been installed we will be able to broadcast live events like Sunday Masses, Ordinations, parish missions, workshops etc. and these will remain archived and accessible online. We are still exploring the possibilities, but we will likely also be able to film the reception of Sacraments and perhaps even Weddings.

Second, maybe you have noticed the presence in the sanctuary of a seminarian. His name is John Cormac and he will be residing at Sacred Heart Cathedral for the next several months, as he continues his discernment for the priesthood in the diocese of Gallup. We invite your prayers and encouragement for John, and your prayers for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

Third, many of you have inquired about the goings on in the garage of the Cathedral. The Vocations office of the diocese of Gallup is undertaking a fund raiser. It is called V8’s for Vocations. A classic 1972 Chevy Chevelle was donated and a complete “frame off” restoration is being done with the help of many interested volunteers. The car will be raffled next summer to help pay for the seminary education of a future priest for the diocese of Gallup. If you have skills in any area of auto mechanics, or want to donate to the cause, please get involved!

Looking ahead, we’re going to have an event filled summer in 2015. There will be several celebrations connected to the 75th Jubilee of the Diocese. June in particular will be filled with celebrations. The week after our parish fiesta on June 6th will be the Ordination of two new priests for the diocese, Deacon Josh Mayer and Deacon David Tate on June 13th. And don’t forget the 60th anniversary celebration of the dedication of our Cathedral on June 19th. Please volunteer your ideas, take part in the planning, working, and celebration of these events!

Today, the Rehoboth Christian school will perform their annual concert at 4:00 pm and on Tuesday at 6:00 pm Sacred Heart school will perform their pre-Christmas concert. Please come and enjoy these performances!

May you have a blessed Advent and preparation for the Coming of our Lord Jesus.
