Funerals: Part 5 of the Series

The Rite of Committal.

The Rite of Committal, the conclusion of the funeral rites, is celebrated at the grave, tomb, or mausoleum for cremated remains.  The rite of committal is used by itself when the final commendation and farewell is celebrated within the funeral liturgy.  The rite of committal with final commendation is used when the final commendation is not celebrated within the funeral liturgy.

The Committal begins with an invitation, a very short Scripture verse, and a prayer over the place of Committal usually accompanied by the sprinkling with Holy Water.  Finally, the prayer of Committal itself, a prayer over the people, and the dismissal are given.  Other local customs, for example the sprinkling of earth on the casket, placing of flowers, or a military observance may be done at the conclusion of the Funeral Rites.

Christian Symbols used in the Funeral ceremonies include The Easter Candle, Holy Water, Incense, the pall, the book of Gospels or a Bible, a cross or crucifix, flowers. No insignia from associations , national flags are used for the funeral liturgy itself. If these are to be used, they may be placed after the liturgy has been completed. The Liturgical color chosen for funerals may be white, violet or black.

As a concluding note, we priests and staff at the Cathedral want you to know that we most sincerely wish to extend our pastoral care and be of service to you and your family at the time of loss. We have committed ourselves to preparing and carrying out the Catholic Rites according to the Order of Christian Funerals in the most beautiful way that we can to give Glory to God and to edify those mourning their loss.
