 From the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

  1. Baptism is an immersing that makes us God’s children (CCC#1214-1216).  The essential rite of

Baptism includes (CCC#1239):

  1. Triple immersion or pouring water over head;
  2. Trinitarian Formula;
  3. Anointing with sacred Chrism (Infant Baptism);
  4. Only those not yet baptized can be baptized (CCC#1246-1255).
  5. Adults are prepared for Baptism through participation in the Catechumenate;
  6. Because of God’s gratuitous grace, infants can receive Baptism;
  7. The ordinary minister of Baptism are Bishops, Priests and Deacons;
  8. Anyone can baptize in case of necessity.
  9. Baptism is necessary for salvation (CCC#1257-1261).
  10. It is the only way known to the Church;
  11. God is not bound by this Sacrament;
  12. Baptism by blood or desire also saves;
  13. We can be saved without baptism only if we are ignorant;
  14. Children who die without Baptism are entrusted to God’s mercy.
  15. The effects of baptism are (CCC#1262-1274):
  16. Purification from all sins including;
  17. Personal (actual) sins;
  18. Original Sin;
  19. The consequences of (punishment for) sin;
  20. The remaining of some results of Original Sin:
  21. Suffering and frailties;
  22. Illness;
  23. Death;
  24. Concupiscence – the attraction to sin.
  25. New birth in the Holy Spirit:
  26. Child of God (New Creature);
  27. Theological virtues of faith, hope, and love;
  28. The Gift of the Holy Spirit;
  29. Membership in Christ’s body;
  30. Share in the Priestly, prophetic and royal mission Christ;
  31. The ability to worship God.
